Thailand’s Constitutional Court Suspends Premier
The court accepted allegations against Paetongtarn concerning her telephone conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen for further examination and consequently suspended her from her role as prime minister, as reported by a news agency.
These accusations were initiated by a coalition of senators who charged her with severe ethical violations and dishonesty linked to the phone call.
This court directive came after the leak of a conversation between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, in which the Thai leader is said to have criticized her nation’s military, specifically targeting the commander of the 2nd Army Region, amidst rising border tensions with Cambodia.
The ruling occurred just hours after King Maha Vajiralongkorn approved a Cabinet reshuffle following the departure of a significant party from the ruling alliance.
At 38 years old, Paetongtarn, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, made history as Thailand’s youngest and only second female prime minister after securing a parliamentary vote victory last August.
