Cambodia, Thailand Agree to Pull Back Heavy Arms from Border
The meeting, led by Cambodian Defense Minister Gen. Tea Seiha and his Thai counterpart Gen. Nattaphon Nakphanit, successfully addressed the urgent need to ease tensions. According to Cambodia's Defense Ministry, this development underscores the strong resolve of both governments to fully implement prior agreements.
“Both sides agreed on the urgent need to de-escalate tensions through removal of heavy and destructive weapons back to their respective normal military installations,” the official statement declared.
The two countries also reiterated their commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and preventing future conflicts. The ministry added that both sides “stressed that strengthening communication at all levels is essential to build mutual trust and promote good neighborliness.”
This session was a follow-up to an extraordinary GBC meeting in Malaysia on August 7, 2025. That previous gathering had resulted in a 13-point accord designed to lower tensions and ensure adherence to a ceasefire. The recent dialogue comes in the wake of deadly clashes in July that resulted in dozens of casualties.
Following the July hostilities, the neighbors had consented to an unconditional ceasefire during a trilateral meeting on July 28 with Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The subsequent 13-point agreement, finalized on August 7, notably included provisions for ASEAN observers to oversee the truce along the disputed border.
